Upload your website via FTP to any host

Your host isn’t listed? With FTP/SFTP the upload works the same with practically every provider.

New to this? Read the basics first – they explain domain, hosting and the structure of your ZIP.

  1. Install FileZilla

Download the free FileZilla Client from filezilla-project.org (only from the official site!).

  2. Access details

In your host’s customer area under “FTP”, “SFTP” or “Webspace”: server (host), username, password and port (21 for FTP, 22 for SFTP).

  3. Connect

Enter the details in FileZilla’s quickconnect bar and click “Quickconnect”. Use SFTP if possible (more secure).

  4. Find the root directory

On the right you see the server. The web directory is often called “public_html”, “htdocs”, “html”, “www” or is “/” itself. If in doubt: that’s usually where the host’s placeholder page is.

  5. Upload

On the left, open the unzipped “website” folder, select all files and folders in it and drag them to the right.

  6. Enable SSL and test

Activate the SSL certificate in your customer area and open your domain.

Tips

  • Error “403 Forbidden”: index.html is not directly in the root directory.
  • Images missing: check upper/lower case in file names – servers treat “Image.jpg” and “image.jpg” differently.

Hosts occasionally rename menu items. If you can’t find something, use the search in your customer area or contact your provider’s support.
